DESCRIPTION

The essential oil of Bitter Fennel is obtained by steam distillation of Foeniculum vulgare.

This plant grows wild in many warm areas of the planet, although it is native to the Southern European area and especially the Mediterranean basin.

The plant is herbaceous, erect and can reach 2 m in height. The leaves, of intense green color, are long and thin, ending in needle-shaped segments. The flower is an umbel of long and entirely yellow peduncles.

All the aerial part of this plant has an aniseed smell and spicy flavor characteristic, but more accentuated in the fruits. These contain essential oil, fixed oil, sugars, starch, nitrogenous substances, cellulose, tannins, etc.

Traditionally the fruits have been used as seasoning and flavoring of food. They are used whole or ground, in tinctures, decoctions and infusions and have carminative, galactagogas, stomach and expectorant properties.
In addition, its essential oil is used in liquor, perfume and medicine, as carminative and diuretic.
